Because of a lapse in government funding, the information on this website may not be up to date, transactions submitted via the website may not be processed, and the agency may not be able to respond to inquiries until appropriations are enacted. The NIH Clinical Center (the research hospital of NIH) is open. For more details about its operating status, please visit cc.nih.gov. For Administrators - Understanding DPS Services
PIN Resets

Resetting Your PIN

If an individual has forgotten his/her PIN, the individual will need to reset it.

Individuals must visit their local Lifecycle Work Station (LWS) operator or stop by one of DPS's Badge Issuance Stations at the NIH Bethesda Main Campus or one of our off-site locations for assistance. Most Institutes, Centers and Offices (ICOs) have purchased one or more Lifecycle Work Stations (LWS) that will allow their personnel to conveniently update their HHS ID Badge (Smart Card) Digital Certificates and reset their Smart Card PINs at a nearby location rather than make a trip to one of DPS's Badge Issuance stations.

PIN reset and certificate renewal services (before certificates expire) can still be obtained at Program Support Center (PSC) locations as well.

Note: To request a PIN reset or certificate renewal (before certificates expire) at a PSC location, please send an email to ORSPersonnelsecurity@mail.nih.gov with the following information:

  • Does/will the customer ultimately work on or near an NIH campus (YES or NO)?
  • Customer's address / duty station
  • ICO CAN (no charge will be assessed but PSC requires a CAN)
  • Service required (PIN reset or certificate renewal)
  • Customer's First Name
  • Customer's Last Name
  • Customer's NED/HHS ID Number
  • Customer's Email Address
  • Customer's Phone Number
  • NIH ICO
  • AO's Email Address and Phone Number
