Visitor Centers

Front fo the Gateway CenterThe Gateway Center is the main entrance for all visitors to the NIH campus. Each year, approximately 1 million people visit the campus.  The Gateway Center is conveniently located off Rockville Pike at South Drive just outside of the Metro Subway Station - Medical Center and the transportation center for Metro, Montgomery, Naval Medical Center and all NIH off campus bus services.
 
The Gateway Center is a security facility designed to present a welcoming atmosphere for those visiting the NIH campus. Security personnel at the Gateway Center are responsible for greeting, screening and processing all visitors, patients and their family members and those attending specific meetings or conferences on campus.
 
After successfully passing the screening process, visitors then proceed to one of the Badge Stations where upon presenting a valid government issued photo ID will obtain a 1-Day Visitor Pass.
 
NIH Employees may access campus by way of the Gateway Center. Individuals possessing a
valid NIH Employee Badge may proceed through the Gateway Center. Employees only need to Inside the Gateway Centerswipe their NIH Employee Badge over the scanner at which time, glass panels will retract allowing 1 person at a time access onto campus.
 
NIH employees are not required to proceed through the screening process unless they fail to possess their NIH Employee Badge.
