Serving the NIH Community

Policies

The Division of Radiation Safety specializes in providing comprehensive services and oversight to protect individuals, populations, and the environment from the potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

We seek to assist the NIH Intramural Research community with managing the health, safety, and environmental risks that may arise while engaging in biomedical, clinical, and translational research efforts that directly support the NIH mission.

Contamination Control and Monitoring
Contamination Control and Monitoring

DRS utilizes careful planning, containment of unsealed source material, use of protective coverings on work areas, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the avoidance of spills through training and experience to manage radiation risk in the laboratory.

Exposure Monitoring
Exposure Monitoring

DRS monitors internal and external occupational radiation exposures from specific radionuclides or radiation-producing equipment for radiation workers employed at the NIH.

Radiological Emergency Response
Radiological Emergency Response

Specific types of radioactive spills and their corresponding decontamination procedures must immediately be reported to the Division of Radiation Safety.

Radiation Safety Protocols
Radiation Safety Protocols

DRS protocols detail the information required to use specific quantities or types of radionuclides when working in laboratories.
