Cell Reports cover illustration on the mechanism of SSHELs

Cover illustration for Cell Reports

Medical illustrator, Erina He, is one of the three medical illustrators here at Medical Arts. She feels really fortunate to have the chance to work on many creative cover illustrations here at the NIH like this one. This illustration, based off Dr. Kumaran Ramamurthi's research from NCI, depicts the usage of novel synthetic bacterial spores called SSHEL to target HER2-positive ovarian tumor cells. The merging of the particles into the targeted cell's membrane is shown in a metaphor as the particle is plunged into the waves. Upon entry, SSHEL releases the therapeutic drug (shown in red) into the cytosol.
