BSL-4/ABSL-4 Laboratory Pressure Decay Testing

Overview

Pressure decay testing evaluates the integrity of BSL-4 laboratory containment barriers and their ability to prevent air leakage from containment spaces.

Testing is performed during initial commissioning and annually thereafter to verify that containment performance remains consistent with established commissioning criteria. Annual testing is performed by SEA engineering personnel, with support from maintenance representatives, to help ensure continued safe laboratory operations.

Purpose

Pressure decay testing verifies the integrity of the physical containment barriers that separate BSL-4 laboratory spaces from surrounding areas. Testing evaluates the condition and performance of containment features, including:

  • Walls
  • Floors
  • Ceilings
  • Penetrations
  • Other containment barrier features

Testing Schedule

Pressure decay testing is conducted at key stages throughout the life of the facility:

Test Type Purpose
Commissioning TestPerformed as part of construction and laboratory commissioning to establish initial containment performance.
Annual Verification TestPerformed annually to verify that containment integrity remains consistent with established commissioning criteria.

Testing is performed by: SEA engineering personnel with assistance from maintenance representatives and other facility personnel, as applicable.

Pre-Test Inspection

Before pressure decay testing begins, a visual and functional inspection is performed to confirm that critical containment components are in appropriate condition and ready for testing.

Components evaluated may include:

  • HEPA filter units
  • Actuators
  • Automatic isolation dampers
  • Gaskets
  • Manual isolation dampers

Laboratory Readiness

Prior to testing, applicable laboratory and facility conditions are also verified. These include:

  • APR doors are verified for proper operation.
  • Dunk tanks and floor drain traps are inspected by laboratory staff.
  • The laboratory is inactive and prepared for testing.
  • Autoclaves are not operational during testing.
  • Laboratory staff confirm that there is no visible damage to walls, floors, ceilings, or other applicable containment surfaces.

These pre-test activities help ensure that the laboratory is appropriately configured and that containment systems and components are ready for pressure decay testing.
