Radiation Safety and Operations Branch (RSOB)

RSOB Services

  • Supports patient radiation therapies (unsealed and sealed sources) and provides oversight of outside contractors, compliance/security surveys, inventory audits, and enforcement of corrective actions including ALARA investigations and leak tests/irradiator inspections.
  • Ensures safe and compliant operations in the NIH Clinical Center, including the positron emission tomography and nuclear medicine departments, radiopharmacy, radiation oncology, molecular imaging, and radiology; Intramural Research Program biomedical research laboratories, Cyclotron Facility, and high containment areas on the main campus and at the Integrated Research Facility in Frederick, MD., including researcher qualification review, protocol approvals, and lab decommissioning clearances.
  • Delivers radiation safety training to NIH workers per federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and Nuclear Regulatory Commission license commitments.
  • Handles a broad range of Radioactive Material administrative and safety functions, such as annual inventories, Authorized User/Irradiator Custodian/Minor application reviews, protocol renewals, dosimeter issue resolution, exposure investigations/dose assessments, shielding calculations, and security inspections.
  • Responds to radiation emergencies, spills, and incidents; manages pregnant/breastfeeding worker precautions; escalates unresolved front-facing issues from the Radiation Management Branch; and supervises and approves radiological decommissioning of NIH and satellite buildings.
