What is an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?
An EAP is a
confidential, short-term service provided by NIH to help employees manage personal and work-related issues. These services can include counseling, mental health support, legal and financial guidance, and other resources.
Who can use the EAP?
All federal employees of the NIH, as well as their immediate family members over the age of 18, may use the program at any time. Federal supervisors and managers may also seek the guidance of a consultant to determine when it is appropriate to refer employees who might be experiencing work performance and conduct changes due to personal problems. Contractors are eligible for one session with the NIH EAP.
What types of issues can the EAP help with?
EAP can assist with a variety of concerns, including but not limited to:
- Stress, anxiety, or depression
- Family and relationship issues
- Substance abuse
- Legal and financial resources
- Work-related conflicts
- Grief and loss
- Parenting challenges
- Childcare and elder care resources
Is the EAP confidential?
Yes. All services provided by the EAP are completely confidential. No information about your involvement with EAP can be released outside the EAP office without your written consent, except in cases involving imminent safety risks or as otherwise required by law.
How much does it cost?
EAP services at NIH are
free to eligible employees and their covered family members (over the age of 18).
How do I access the EAP?
You can access the EAP by:

- Scheduling an appointment with a counselor or consultant
How many sessions do I get?
Federal Employees - up to six sessions, per issue.
Contractors - while contractors are eligible for one session with NIH's EAP, if additional sessions/resources are needed, the NIH EAP consultant will assist contractors in locating resources to support their needs.
Can I use the EAP during work hours?
Yes, if your schedule allows, sessions can be held during work hours.
Is the EAP available 24/7?
No, the NIH EAP is not available 24/7. Our business hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and 7:30am to 4:00pm on Friday. Please note our office phone and email is not monitored after hours.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis after hours, please call 911 or go to your closest emergency room. You may also call or text the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. If you need urgent support after hours from the NIH Occupational Medical Service, please call 301-496-1211 and ask for the on-call OMS physician.
What if I have a concern about using the EAP?
If you have concerns or questions, contact your HR department or reach out to the EAP provider directly. They are there to help you feel comfortable and supported.
