NIH Division of Police Guidance on Prohibited Items
The National Institutes of Health facilities are Federal installations that operate under the same guidelines used by other Federal facilities and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Before visiting the NIH ask yourself the questions: Would I bring this item through a TSA checkpoint at the airport? If the answer is no….don't bring it to the NIH. Here is a list of prohibited items that are illegal to bring onto an NIH campus or facility:
Possession of the following items is strictly prohibited on NIH property per Executive Order 14111, Interagency Security Committee:
- Firearms
- Explosives
- Archery equipment
- Dangerous weapons
- Knives with blades over 2.5 inches.
- Narcotics and controlled substances INCLUDING MARJIUANA
-
ANY Alcoholic beverages, open or not.
Additionally, all vehicles and their occupants entering or present at NIH locations are subject to inspection and search in accordance with 41 CFR Part 102-74.
The NIH has a prohibition against
smoking. Possession of tobacco products is allowed but smoking on campus is prohibited and a chargeable offense as a violation of 45 CFR 3.24(f). The prohibition includes smoking, vaping and marijuana use and applies even if you are in your personal vehicle while the vehicle is on campus.
