NIH Division of Police: Tips for Commuting by Bicycle

The NIH Main Campus in Bethesda, Maryland offers a variety of commuting options—one of the most enjoyable being by bicycle. Many NIH employees choose to bike because the campus is conveniently located near the Rock Creek Bike Trail and Bethesda Trolley Trail. Both trails connect Washington, D.C., with nearby communities and provide safe, scenic routes for cyclists.

The NIH Division of Police encourages all cyclists to plan ahead, follow the rules of the road, and make safety their top priority.

Registering Your Bicycle

Registering your bicycle is one of the best ways to help recover it if it's ever lost or stolen. The NIH Division of Police recommends registering your bike both locally and with a national database as soon as you purchase it.

National Registration Options

Local Registration Options

Registering with the NIH Division of Police

You may also register your bicycle directly with the NIH Division of Police.
Email NIHCommunityPolicingOffice@mail.nih.gov to schedule an appointment to meet with an officer and register your bike in person.

You can also register your bicycle at the Police Information Table during Bike to Work Day events held on the NIH Main Campus.

NIH Campus Bicycle Rules and Regulations

Under Maryland State Law §21-1202, bicycles are considered vehicles when operated on public roadways. Cyclists must follow the same traffic laws as motorists, including stopping at all stop signs and obeying all posted traffic signals on campus.

Campus Bicycle Requirements

  1. Bicycles may not be left on campus overnight.
  2. Bicycles must be parked and secured at designated bike racks or in bike lockers.
  3. Bicycles are not permitted inside NIH buildings.

Enforcement and Tagging

  • A yellow tag indicates that a bicycle is in violation of NIH campus regulations. The tag serves as a written warning and notice to move the bike.
  • A red tag indicates a bicycle that appears to be abandoned. The NIH Division of Police may remove bicycles tagged as abandoned.

Cyclists who fail to follow campus bicycle regulations may be subject to citations or other enforcement actions.

Bicycle Safety

The goal of every commute—by bike, car, or on foot—is to arrive safely. Remember: everyone you see on the road has the same goal. While you can't control the actions of others, you can make safety your personal priority by being alert, visible, and predictable.
