Learn First Aid and CPR
With a half-million cardiac arrests each year, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and/or the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) can help save a life if a person stops breathing or their heart stops. It's not just for healthcare workers and emergency responders. In fact, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival when bystanders take action before emergency medical services arrive.
Training at NIH
As an NIH employee, you can receive training on CPR and using an AED. The training covers CPR instruction with the use of AEDs located at NIH facilities located on and off campus and is available only to NIH employees, Public Health Services Officers and long-term contractors.
Training in the Community
To prepare for an emergency, take a first aid and CPR class. Local American Red Cross chapters can provide information about this type of training. Official certification by the American Red Cross provides, under the “good Samaritan” law, protection for those giving first aid.
