Animal Study Proposal Requirements

​Animal studies involving radioactive materials and/or radiation producing equipment must be approved by the DRS by reviewing and completing the requirements listed below. ​ 

​Working​ with Radioactive Materials and Animals at the NIH

The use of radioactive material in animals at the NIH requires approval of an Animal Study Proposal by an Institute's Animal Care and Use Committee, with DRS sign-off.  This approval must be obtained prior to initiating the animal study.  

In certain situations, a DRS Radiation Safety Protocol may also be required. Procedures for all work with radioactive materials involving animals at the NIH can be viewed on the DRS intranet (NIH credentials required). ​​

Standard Requirements for DRS Protocols

The Division of Radiation Safety has developed standard requirements for protocols for a number of radionuclides. Please review the Standard Radiation Safety Requirements for DRS Protocols​ for any work involving the use of iodinations prior to submitting a DRS Laboratory Protocol Application​.
