About DS

The Division of  Safety (DS) ensures the highest practical degree of safety and health for employees in all activities of the NIH. Through surveillance, consultation, training and education, the DS serves as the operational component in developing and implementing NIH-wide safety and health programs. The DS is assessing and initiating preventive measures to avoid NIH work-related injuries and illnesses through research, monitoring and investigations. Furthermore, workplace reviews are conducted to evaluate compliance with occupational safety and health policies and procedures.The DS is participating in numerous projects including: developing national and international biosafety guidelines, risk assessment studies, the design, construction and operation of maximum containment facilities and training. In response to Health and Human Services’ strategic plan for biodefense research, the DS and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) have initiated the National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP) providing a rare opportunity to receive professional training in biosafety and biocontainment at the NIH.
