The cover image illustrates that sialy​lated mucin proteins (saguaros with thorns) harbor symbiotic commensal bacteria (gilded flickers), protecting the intestinal tissue from pathogens (snakes and hawks). Loss of sialylation (saguaros without thorns) results in pathogenic bacteria invasion (snakes).
