Beginning on Saturday, July 26 and continuing through November 30, 2025, the top level and ramp to the upper deck of the MLP-6 parking garage, as well as the westernmost access road to MLP-6 off Lincoln Drive (closest to Old Georgetown Road) will be temporarily closed to install solar panels, providing renewable energy with the ancillary benefit of shielding vehicles from the effects of sun and inclement weather. During this period of closure, occupants will need to enter and exit MLP-6 from the location off Convent Drive. All stairwells leading to the top deck of the garage will also have barriers and signage in place advising staff that the top deck of the garage is closed.
This is the first of several parking garages, including MLPs 7 and 9, to receive solar panels. With the installations, NIH will be offsetting approximately 2MW of electrical capacity and the array will save 3,200,000 kWh of energy and approximately $330,000 in electricity costs per year.
To address the temporary loss in parking, the NIH Parking Office suggests staff consider parking in Lots 41 and 42 and take advantage of the Building 10 Express Shuttle available to/from Lots 41 and 42 to/from the south side of Building 10.
The Office of Research Facilities (ORF) and the Office of Research Services (ORS) appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this energy and cost savings project for the NIH. Visit the NIH Employee Campus Map to determine alternative routes and parking areas such as Lots 41 and 42.
