Purpose
This program is offered to NIH personnel planning to travel for work to areas with known health risks in order to reduce the likelihood of injury or illness such as infectious diseases associated with certain destinations or activities. Based on review of an NIH traveler's proposed itinerary and duties, an OMS clinician provides appropriate counseling, immunizations, and medications according to established guidelines.
Eligibility
Federal NIH employees, including trainees, with official travel orders.
How to Prepare for Work-Related International Travel
Employees planning international work-related travel or domestic high-risk work assignments are encouraged to submit a completed Travel Immunization Form to the Occupational Medicine Service (OMS) via fax at (301) 402-0673 or via encrypted email at omstravel@nih.gov preferably four to six weeks prior to departure.
Authorized travel orders may be submitted separately, even after the request form has been received and processing has begun.
An OMS provider will contact the traveler to schedule an appointment based on recommended immunizations, medications, and other preventive measures. Appointments are scheduled as soon as possible, preferably at least two to three weeks before departure to ensure immunization effectiveness.
