Purpose
Summer student medical evaluations are a type of preplacement evaluation specifically for summer students and are intended to ensure the safety of the student, employees, patients, and/or animals the student may encounter. As a part of the appointment, OMS provides work-related health and safety advice, offers appropriate vaccines and enrolls the individual in the applicable OMS surveillance programs.
Eligibility
If any of the following applies to the prospective student, the student should be cleared by the OMS.
• Works in Building 10 (all areas);
• Works with patients (i.e. has any patient contact or works in patient care areas);
• Works with human blood, body fluids, or tissues;
• Works with human pathogens (infectious agents);
• Works with select carcinogens, reproductive toxins, or acutely toxic chemicals; or
• Works with animals.
An Administrative Officer or Supervisor must send a Summer Student Clearance Form to OMS to start the clearance process. Once processed, an OMS staff person will contact the student to schedule the appointment.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
The student will need to provide:
• A completed Documentation of Immunization Form; and
• An Authorization for Treatment of a Minor, if under the age of 18.
These appointments are typically conducted between April and July, by appointment only. Prospective students may schedule their evaluations at our main NIH campus, at one of our satellite campuses (depending upon work location), or set up a virtual meeting (an in-person follow-up appointment may be necessary).
