Keeping the NIH community safe is a responsibility we all share. On Thursday, April 23, your children become part of the NIH community as part of our Take Your Child To Work Day and Earth Day events. We are expecting over 3,500 children and their parents/guardians accessing the campus, parking, walking and using metro. Please remember to be patient and considerate of others as we enjoy this day with future NIHers. We encourage everyone to review the Safety Tips and Campus Access information below to ensure we all have a safe and fun day.
Safety Tips:
- Stay together! All children under age 16 – registered or not – must be accompanied by a parent or another responsible adult at all times. Do not take your children's safety for granted.
- Provide your child with a reliable way of contacting you in the event you become separated. Write your name, email and cellphone number on a piece of paper and put it in your child's pocket. Trying to remember a telephone number in a stressful situation can be difficult for anyone.
- To report a lost child, call 301-496-9911 or TTY 301-496-0063 to reach the NIH Emergency Communications Center.
- For all medical emergencies or non-emergencies requiring first aid – dial 911 from a landline or 301-496-9911 from a cell phone.
- Review the latest traffic campus map. There are several active construction projects on the main campus. Determine ahead of time what is the best way to enter the campus and get to your destination.
- Drivers and Pedestrians – Stay Alert. Drivers - please slow down and allow extra time to get to your destination. Pedestrians - always use sidewalks and crosswalks and make sure you have made eye contact before you step off the curve. There are regularly scheduled and TYCTWD shuttles to get you around campus.
- For parents of children registered in lab activities, please pay careful attention to the NIH Manual Chapter Policy "Admittance of Minors to Hazardous Areas."
Campus Access on Thursday, April 23:
- Children (age 17 & under) can accompany an adult through any employee vehicle entrance with an Accompanied Child Visitor Pass (ACVP). Have this form filled out, printed and ready to hand to the guard upon arrival. Bring an extra copy if you intend to leave and return to campus. Please list all children on one form.
- Visitors 18 years and older must provide a valid current form of government-issued identification to obtain a visitor ID and be cleared through the NIH Gateway Center.
- In addition to regularly scheduled shuttles, two (2) special TYCTWD shuttles will loop continuously throughout the Bethesda main campus starting at 8 AM for Shuttle #1 and 8:20 AM for Shuttle #2. The special shuttles will operate until 4 PM. To learn more about shuttle stops, parking options and to print a Temporary Activity Parking Permit, visit the Shuttle App and Parking webpage.
- If you have an activity in Building 10, sign up for the NIHCC "TakeMeThere" Clinical Center app to help you find your way.
If you have any questions, please contact us at Take-Your-Child-To-Work@nih.gov.
Enjoy the day, safely!
