Celebrate National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day (BTWD)
with the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club (NIHBCC), Friday, May 17, from 7:00-9:30 am
on the Paul Rogers Plaza in front of Bldg. 1 or at other off-campus locations.
NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins and Montgomery County
Council Member Hans Riemer will bike to work and give remarks at the Bldg. 1
pit stop around 8:30-9:00 am.
There will be the presentation of the inaugural Carl Henn
Bicycling Advocacy Award. This award is in memory of Carl Henn, a former NIH
employee who was very active with the NIHBCC and within our community.
The NIH will host a pit stop supported by the Washington
Area Bicyclists Association (WABA) in a national salute to bicycle commuting.
Last year, more than 10,000 area residents participated in this annual event,
and even more participants are anticipated this year.
The NIH has led the National Capital Region every year
since 2005 as the employer with the most Bike to Work Day participants. As the
Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's (COG) 2012 BTWD winner, we need
to defend that title. Please help us defend our proud title this year by registering
online. Even if you do not choose NIH as your Pit Stop, selecting
"National Institutes of Health" as your employer will help us defend
our COG participation title.
To register visit the following link:
http://www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/national-institutes-of-health-building-one-pit-stop/
(Pit stop runs from 7:00-9:30am). Click the "Register Now" tab in the
upper right hand corner. In the drop down box, choose "National Institutes
of Health Bldg One" or the respective pit stop near your off-campus location.
The off-campus pit stops run from 6:30am to 8:30 am.
NIH Pit Stop employees and contractors who show up riding
a bicycle and wearing a helmet may enjoy breakfast snacks and participate in a
prize raffle, to include cycling gear, equipment and Fitness Center
memberships. All snacks and prizes associated with the event are sponsored by
the R&W and NIHBCC. All pre-registrants with COG may pick up their Bike to
Work Day t-shirt while supplies last at the pit stops. T-shirts provided by COG
are sponsored by WABA and issued by the NIHBCC for the convenience of the participants.
Bike to Work Day is a rain or shine event.
If you have never tried commuting by bike to NIH and
aren't quite sure how to begin, please explore the "Commuting" link
on the NIH Bicycle Commuter Club website at: http://www.nihbike.com/.
It offers advice on topics ranging from purchasing a bicycle to favorite NIH
commuting routes from all over the DC metro area.
