Indoors:
- Do not store food in work areas and designate specific areas for eating
- Keep personal food in sealed containers (e.g., Tupperware or hard plastic/ glass, not cardboard or original packaging) and stored in refrigerators when possible
- Perform regular cleaning including concealed and difficult to reach areas; promptly clean up spills
- Keep laboratory areas free of debris with little to no storage on the floors
- Store animal diet and research supplies in sealed containers that are rodent proof (glass or metal)
- Regularly dispose of trash and ensure waste bins are tightly sealed. Ensure trash is not left in locked office areas overnight or on weekends; when appropriate, place trash in a common receptacle
Outdoors:
- Promptly remove any debris, eliminate excess storage of supplies and equipment and regularly empty waste containers and dumpsters
- Refrain from feeding any animals, including birds, squirrels and rodents
Note: Refrain from using or bringing your own bait as it may disrupt the current pest management baiting efforts.
Seal Entry Points
- Seal any gaps, cracks or holes in the building's structure using materials such as stainless wool (Excluder), wire mesh, galvanized steel or other more resilient exclusion techniques, especially in entry areas, utility penetrations, doors, windows and vents
- Repair door sweeps; install them on the opposite side of the door hinges
Regular Inspections and Maintenance
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address any new signs of mouse activity with priority given to ground-floor entry areas
- Give prompt attention to repairing leaks, replacing damaged screens, landscaping and keeping doors in working condition (level, tight fit door sweeps)
Educate Staff
- Provide training on recognizing signs of mouse infestation, proper sanitation practices and protocols for reporting pest sightings
- Emphasize the importance of accountability, cooperation and compliance with integrated pest management measures to prevent the spread of infestation and protect research integrity
- Emphasize prompt reporting and follow-up on maintenance and repair requests
