Hurricane Season -- Be Prepared
Page Content
The NIH would like to remind staff that hurricane season is upon us. June 1 marked the beginning of the hurricane season. As we learned firsthand with Hurricane Sandy, the D.C./Baltimore region is not immune to hurricanes. History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.
Some keys to hurricane safety are to prepare for the risk and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials. Highlights on how to prepare and take action include making a communication plan, building an emergency supplies kit, and staying informed before, during, and after a hurricane. FEMA has provided substantial details on these recommendations through their Ready.gov campaign. (
